Gaming Machines

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Accidentally bought something interesting. The last game I played was ‘Dark Castle’ on a Mac+ back in ‘91, so you can see how keen I am on gaming. However, consider the magazine PC Gamer; the issue I got is the 2008 PC Builders Bible. Maybe if you are considering upgrading a workstation, you could do better to scour the used gaming machines - they are always getting rid of what they regard as ‘old’ stuff - old stuff that might have some serious advantages over standard new workstations - don’t need to play games on it. Just a thought…

Linux Group HOWTO

Monday, July 21st, 2008

What you find on the net! While looking for information on Linux organisations, I found some bemoaning the moribund nature of once-active groups. The Linux Documentation Project actually has a HOWTO guide to founding, maintaining and growing a Linux Group, which contains a lot of experience from all over the world about this subject. Might be worth a squiz at http:// tldp.org/ HOWTO/ html_single/ User-Group-HOWTO/

eeepc dual boot

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Also in the Linux Format August 2008 issue is a tutorial about how to add another distro. to boot from an SSD card in the slot on the right of the EeePC, so you could have Debian Etch running with Xandros, for example, rather than replacing Xandros.

ftp downloader

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

The latest Linux Format magazine for August 2008 reviews ‘aria2c’, a good commandline ftp and http file downloader, which is cleverer than the one I usually use (viz. wget). It is just as fast as wget for one connection — the difference is that it can break files into parts, then download the parts and reassemble them later. Works on BitTorrent protocol as well.

Tech Show

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

I found the Tech Show fairly disappointing for a Linux user. We had to trawl though all the exhibits three times to come up with any small crumbs of interest. We found only 2 books on Linux and not a single Firefox. At least there were some pretty girls …
